Emigrating to South Africa: importing your goods

Importing goods to South Africa

Importing of your goods

Immigrants and holders of a temporary residence permit may import their personal property without payment of import duties and VAT (excluding alcoholic beverages and tobacco products). An inventory of the property and the residence permit must be manufactured at customs. For example, foreign students and employees with a contract will also be eligible if they (temporarily) change their place of residence. These households (with the exception of weapons, ammunition and motor vehicles) do not need an import license.

Importing of  motor vehicles

Imports of second hand motor vehicles have been subject to strict restrictions. In general, the ITAC (International Administration Act) refuses entry if similar or equivalent vehicles are available from local manufacturers. For second-hand buses, lorries and coaches there is a general ban on imports. Exceptions are sometimes made for passenger cars. We therefore advise you to consult ITAC in advance.

Importing of new goods into

Newly purchased goods must be passed on to the movers. Import duties must be paid. The amount to be paid will be calculated by local customs on the value of the goods and the freight charges. (CIF Value)

Import of alcoholic beverages, tobacco products etc.

A maximum amount has been set for the number of items you can take from the Netherlands to South Africa without having to pay import duties. If you want to bring more, you will pay 20% of import duties on the total value of your goods. If the total amount you wish to enter exceeds 10,000 rand, you will even pay an 30% import tariff, excluding VAT.

Before moving to South Africa, it is also important to know that a number of hazardous substances can not be taken. On our site you can read more about these substances or inform them at Transpack. Also for the import of a car, strict requirements are met and we recommend that you contact your relocation coordinator.

Furthermore, it is very important that you are present at the arrival of your relocation in South Africa. This is required for the clearance of your goods. This avoids unnecessary costs for customs storage.

Our specialists will review all these steps, procedures and necessary documents!
